Iran’s FM Spokesperson Rejects U.S. Allegations
WANA (Feb 05) – Esmail Baqai, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded today to recent remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Baqai rejected Trump’s claim that Iran is attempting to build nuclear weapons, calling it a “great lie” that has been disproven multiple times. He emphasized that those seeking assurances about such claims can easily obtain them.
Iran’s Stance on Nuclear Weapons
Baqai stressed that Iran, in accordance with a fatwa issued by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, considers the production of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) to be forbidden. He contrasted Iran’s position with that of Israel, which is not a signatory to any international treaties prohibiting WMDs and has openly threatened to use nuclear weapons in its conflict with Gaza.
Baqai reaffirmed that Iran is a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), with its nuclear program fully under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in line with safeguard agreements. He reiterated that Iran categorically rejects WMDs for both religious and humanitarian reasons.
Iran’s Commitment to Diplomacy and National Defense
Baqai also addressed ongoing tensions with the U.S., stating that while Iran remains open to diplomatic dialogue aimed at protecting its national interests, it is equally resolute in defending its sovereignty against any threats. He made it clear that Iran will respond to any aggression or pressure with firm resistance.
False Allegations of Terrorism
The spokesperson also dismissed the provocative claims that Iran is involved in plotting the assassination of U.S. officials, calling them fabrications of warmongers and dishonest individuals. He reiterated that Iran has the right to pursue legal action for the assassination of its national heroes and senior officials, both within domestic and international courts.
U.S. Moves to Intensify Sanctions
Earlier, U.S. President Trump issued an executive order, just before meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, directing agencies to intensify the “maximum pressure” policy against Iran. Trump expressed hope that these sanctions would not need to be enforced, wishing for the possibility of a negotiated agreement. On a final note, he also indicated his willingness to meet with Iran’s president to discuss matters directly.
