WANA (Feb 24) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi, speaking at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, emphasized that Iran has faced various challenges in recent decades, including terrorism and illegal sanctions.

“These challenges have had a devastating impact on the economy and the economic and social rights of Iranians,” Araqchi stated.

“However, by adhering to Islamic principles, Iran has made significant achievements in women’s rights, development, healthcare, education, industry, and economic progress.”

He further asserted, “The greatest obstacle to human rights in the international community is the policy of imposing unilateral and illegal sanctions. Such actions have harmful effects on ordinary people and vulnerable groups. Iran has consistently opposed these measures.”

Araqchi criticized countries that impose sanctions, saying, “Some nations, through sanctions, prevent targeted countries from accessing essential medicines and other basic goods. We demand the removal of all unilateral sanctions, as they violate the rights of Iranians and lead to the suffering of innocent people.”

On the issue of Palestine, the Iranian foreign minister declared, “No one can discuss human rights while ignoring the crimes committed by the Israeli regime against Palestinians. Iran condemns the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza by the occupying regime. Palestinians are experiencing genocide, and their rights are being disregarded. Israel’s actions violate human rights and the Geneva Conventions.”

Araqchi called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its crimes against Palestinians and to prevent further violence against them.

“The United Nations must uphold justice and fulfill its responsibilities. Iran will remain steadfast in its support for Palestinians. The forced displacement of Gaza’s residents and the continuation of occupation policies dating back eight decades are unacceptable. We oppose these actions. Iran has always emphasized respect for human rights, and given its rich history and civilization, it continues to advocate for the improvement and expansion of human rights,” he said.

He also highlighted Iran’s efforts to enhance the rights of women, children, and the elderly, adding, “At the same time, we believe that human rights should not be used as a pretext for foreign interference in other countries’ affairs.”

Araqchi accused some countries of exploiting human rights for political purposes, stating, “Experience has shown that certain nations have used human rights as a tool to advance their political agendas through international organizations. We urge all countries to pursue the development of human rights based on equality and justice.”

Concluding his speech, the Iranian foreign minister reiterated, “Iran is committed to continuing its constructive cooperation with the UN Human Rights Council and hopes that all nations will take joint, constructive actions in this direction.”
