WANA (Mar 14) – China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that sanctions, political pressure, and military threats are not a solution to Iran’s nuclear issue, following a trilateral meeting between Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing.

According to China’s state television, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated in a press briefing on Friday that representatives from Iran, Russia, and China held extensive discussions on Tehran’s nuclear issue and issued a joint statement reaffirming that political and diplomatic engagement remains the only effective and practical approach to resolving the matter.

The three representatives called on all relevant parties to refrain from imposing sanctions, exerting political pressure, or making military threats and urged against any actions that could escalate tensions.

Mao further noted that the delegations from Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing reiterated the importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The Chinese and Russian representatives welcomed Iran’s reaffirmation that its nuclear program is peaceful and that it has no intention of acquiring nuclear weapons. They also voiced support for continued cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Reports indicate that both China and Russia underscored the need to respect Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy.

Mao stressed that the Iranian nuclear issue is at a critical juncture and that the Beijing meeting marked a significant effort by China, Russia, and Iran to seek a political resolution.

He reiterated China’s stance that sanctions, political pressure, and military threats are ineffective, emphasizing that dialogue and negotiation are the only viable paths to a resolution.

During the press briefing, Mao called on all parties to enhance communication and dialogue to create the conditions necessary for the resumption of negotiations.

Additionally, the Chinese diplomat reaffirmed Beijing’s readiness to collaborate with all relevant parties to achieve a fair, balanced, and sustainable solution to Iran’s nuclear issue. He also stressed the importance of maintaining the global non-proliferation regime and strengthening international and regional peace and stability.

Separately, on Thursday, China’s Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi in Beijing. Gharibabadi traveled to China for the trilateral meeting on nuclear issues hosted by Beijing.

Ma emphasized that China values its relationship with Iran and is committed to deepening cooperation across various fields in line with the strategic partnership framework agreed upon by the two nations’ leaders.

Gharibabadi, in turn, reiterated Iran’s strategic perspective on its ties with China and expressed Tehran’s desire for continued mutual support in safeguarding shared interests.

Ma also reaffirmed China’s commitment to playing an active and constructive role in advancing dialogue and reconciliation efforts, supporting a political resolution to Iran’s nuclear issue from an objective and fair standpoint.

Gharibabadi, expressing appreciation for China’s constructive role, conveyed Iran’s readiness to strengthen coordination with Beijing in pursuing a political resolution to the nuclear issue.
