Meeting Between the Foreign Ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Italy
WANA (Apr 19) – Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who is in Rome to participate in the second round of indirect Iran–U.S. negotiations, met this morning with Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In this meeting, the Iranian Foreign Minister congratulated the people of Italy on Easter and expressed appreciation to his Italian counterpart for the arrangements made—coordinated with Oman—for hosting this round of talks in Rome. As in the first round, these negotiations will be facilitated by the Omani Foreign Minister and held at one of the Sultanate of Oman’s diplomatic venues in Rome. The two ministers also discussed the latest developments in bilateral relations and international affairs.
Highlighting Iran’s commitment to diplomacy and its long-standing engagement with the international community on nuclear issues, Araghchi emphasized the need for all parties to seize this opportunity to reach a logical and reasonable understanding. Such an agreement should respect the legitimate rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran, lead to the lifting of unjust and illegal sanctions, and, through voluntary confidence-building measures, address any remaining doubts about the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.
Reiterating the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities and Iran’s categorical rejection of weapons of mass destruction based on its national and religious values and its defensive doctrine, Araghchi pointed to Israel as the sole obstacle to a Middle East free of nuclear weapons. He criticized the regime for genocide, lawlessness, and aggression toward neighboring countries, while pursuing Iranophobia and contributing to regional instability. He urged Europe and the international community to take a responsible stance, free from imposed narratives.
Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Foreign Minister, welcomed his Iranian counterpart and the accompanying delegation, stating that hosting these talks was highly valuable for Italy. Recalling the long-standing historical ties between Iran and Italy, he reaffirmed his country’s interest in strengthening bilateral relations and emphasized Italy’s readiness to provide any assistance necessary to help ensure the success of the Iran–U.S. negotiations.
