Iranian Nano-Enhanced Sunscreens Hit International Markets
WANA (Apr 21) – A group of innovators at an Iranian knowledge-based company has successfully developed a new generation of high-performance sunscreens using domestically produced titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles. These advanced formulations have not only earned national and international certifications but are also being exported to neighboring countries.
The company leveraged nanotechnology and locally manufactured titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles to create sunscreens that meet both domestic demand and growing international interest. The inclusion of these nanoscale particles significantly enhances the products’ ability to reflect and scatter harmful UV radiation, providing superior protection compared to conventional sunscreens.
Dr. Mohammadreza Shahini, head of the company’s innovation department, explained, “Metallic nanoparticles, when reduced to the nanoscale, effectively reflect sunlight and shield the skin from harmful UV rays. To boost both efficacy and safety, these nanoparticles are coated with alkylsilane, which prevents skin irritation and allergic reactions. Unlike larger particles that leave a white residue, these nanoscale ingredients offer a more natural look and better performance.”
He emphasized the importance of crystal structure in the safety and effectiveness of the nanoparticles: “The European Union prohibits the use of anatase-structured titanium dioxide in cosmetics due to safety concerns, permitting only the rutile form. Adhering to this standard, we use rutile-structured titanium dioxide in our sunscreens, which has helped our products gain nanotechnology certification from Iran’s Nanotechnology Development Headquarters as well as approval from the Ministry of Health.”
Nafiseh Nikpey, an R&D expert at the company, highlighted the significance of localizing the production of these nanomaterials: “Since 2017, international sanctions have made it increasingly difficult to import zinc oxide nanoparticles. This challenge pushed us toward domestic production. Today, we produce our own supply of coated zinc oxide nanoparticles.”
She added, “These coated nanoparticles not only offer excellent UV reflectivity but also do not penetrate living skin tissue, ensuring a higher level of safety and more effective protection compared to conventional sunscreens.”
The company’s product line currently includes 14 different nano-based sunscreens in the form of creams and lotions. These products create a protective layer immediately upon application and remain on the skin’s surface, forming an effective barrier against both UVA and UVB rays.
Thanks to their high quality, proven safety, and compliance with international standards, these Iranian-made sunscreens are now being exported to several neighboring countries, including Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait.
