Iran, Russia Boost Trade and Transit
WANA (Apr 24) – Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, says Tehran and Moscow are entering a “golden era” of relations, marked by growing economic cooperation, aligned regional goals, and a shared push for new trade corridors.
Speaking at the 18th Iran–Russia Joint Economic Commission in Moscow, Jalali emphasized the importance of geographical proximity and strategic alignment.
Jalali pointed to the Supreme Leader’s recent message to President Putin, highlighting Iran’s support for a strong, globally active Russia and an independent Iran. He also noted increasing convergence between the two nations in international forums like BRICS.
He noted that both countries are committed to strengthening bilateral ties through initiatives like the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which aims to turn Iran into a key global transit hub, possibly rivaling the Suez Canal.
“Russia sees this corridor not just as a trade route but as a strategic necessity,” Jalali said, pointing to a $500 billion investment aimed at expanding the northern branch. Trade volumes along the route have risen sharply—from 3.7 million tons in 2022 to 33 million tons last year.
The ambassador also welcomed a Russian proposal to export gas via Iran and urged quick implementation. Meanwhile, bilateral trade has reached $5 billion, and Iran’s upcoming free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union is expected to give that figure a further boost.
