Iran and Azerbaijan Strengthen Regional Cooperation
WANA (Apr 28) – The President of Iran, highlighting the historical, cultural, and familial ties between the nations of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, stated that these connections can serve as a foundation for paving the way toward expanded regional cooperation.
Speaking at the high-level meeting between Iranian and Azerbaijani delegations, held on Monday afternoon, April 28, 2025, at the Zagulba Presidential Palace, Masoud Pezeshkian said: “It is an honor to be in the Republic of Azerbaijan and to participate in a gathering of officials from this brotherly and friendly nation. I hope this visit, along with the agreements reached in previous expert-level meetings, will mark the beginning of greater strides in strengthening the relationship between our two countries.”
The Iranian President reiterated that the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and familial bonds between the peoples of Iran and Azerbaijan could provide a strong basis for fostering greater regional cooperation.
Conveying the warm greetings of the Supreme Leader of Iran to Azerbaijani officials, he emphasized: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported the rights of the Azerbaijani people and firmly believes that the Karabakh region is an inseparable part of the Republic of Azerbaijan’s territory.”
The President considered the presence of the Iranian delegation in Baku as a clear indication of the strong determination of both nations to deepen ties, strengthen unity, and enhance cohesion between Iran and Azerbaijan.
Earlier on Monday, local time, President Pezeshkian arrived at Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport, where he was warmly welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov and Deputy Foreign Minister Samir Sharifov.
Following the official welcoming ceremony, the presidents of the two countries held a private meeting and then chaired a joint session of the high-level delegations from Iran and Azerbaijan.

Afterward, during the official signing ceremony for bilateral cooperation documents, Masoud Pezeshkian and Ilham Aliyev are scheduled to elaborate on the outcomes of their discussions at a joint press conference.
In the presence of the Presidents of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, in addition to a joint statement issued for the visit, seven cooperation agreements between various executive sectors of the two countries were signed by senior officials.
Pezeshkian’s itinerary in Baku also includes attending a joint meeting of economic stakeholders from both nations alongside the Azerbaijani President, as well as meeting with Iranian expatriates living in Azerbaijan.
It is worth mentioning that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Political Advisor to the President Mehdi Sanaei are accompanying Pezeshkian on this trip.
This official visit by the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Azerbaijan represents one of the key diplomatic moves by Iran’s 14th government to strengthen regional and neighborly relations—a continuation of efforts to revitalize ties between the two countries in recent years.
