WANA (May 10) – Informed sources have stated that the religious authority, Grand Ayatollah Abdullah Javadi Amoli (one of the prominent Shia clerics in Iran), is scheduled to meet with the Grand Marja, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Hosseini Sistani, in the holy city of Najaf.

This meeting is considered one of the most distinguished scholarly and spiritual gatherings at the level of religious authority.

During this session, a number of contemporary religious and intellectual issues, as well as developments concerning the Islamic Ummah, will be discussed and examined.

It is expected that, given the current challenges, this meeting will convey important messages.

Who are Shia Muslims?

Shia Muslims, also known as Shia Islam, are the second-largest branch of Islam, following Sunni Islam. They believe that the Prophet Muhammad designated his cousin and son-in-law, Ali, as his rightful heir and the first Imam.

Shia Muslims follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad and the guidance of his family, known as the Ahl al-Bayt, or his descendants, the Shia Imams

Who is Marja?

In Shia Islam, a marja, or marjiʿ, is a highly respected religious authority, essentially a source to be followed for legal and religious guidance.

They are recognized as knowledgeable and pious scholars who can interpret Islamic law and provide rulings on various matters. Marjas are typically grand ayatollahs, and the highest-ranking among them is known as the “marja al-taqlid”.
