UK Summons Iranian Ambassador Over Arrest of Iranian Nationals
WANA (May 19) – The British government announced on Monday that the UK’s Foreign Ministry has summoned Seyed Ali Mousavi, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to London. London claimed that this action came following the indictment of three Iranian citizens under the “National Security Law.”
British police had previously announced the arrest of seven Iranian citizens on charges of “plotting an attack,” though four of them were released in recent days.
Earlier, the head of the Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division of the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service, said: “After reviewing the evidence provided by the Counter Terrorism Command of the Metropolitan Police Service, we have authorized criminal charges against three Iranian nationals.”
In a statement, the UK Foreign Office said, “The United Kingdom government has made it clear that protecting national security is our top priority, and Iran must be held accountable for its actions.”
The statement also claimed that the summoning was in response to UK officials’ announcement that the three Iranians had been accused of “involvement in potentially assisting a foreign intelligence service.”
Yesterday, Iran summoned the UK’s senior diplomat in Tehran to protest the actions of the London police.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei also called the arrests arbitrary and said the detainees were denied consular access and clear charges. He urged UK authorities to clarify the case and dispel suspicions of political motives.
