WANA (May 08) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who had travelled to India, arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday, at the head of a diplomatic delegation for high-level talks with Indian officials.

The visit, long planned in advance, aims to convene the 20th Iran-India Joint Economic Commission and expand bilateral cooperation amid complex regional and international developments.

Speaking to reporters upon arrival, Araghchi emphasized that the main focus of the trip is economic. “This visit had been scheduled for some time. Its primary objective is to hold the Iran-India Joint Economic Commission,” he stated.

He added that senior representatives from Iran’s key economic ministries are accompanying him to review and advance bilateral economic cooperation, which he described as “strategically important.”

In addition to economic discussions, the Iranian Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of political consultations between Tehran and New Delhi.

“We have consistently consulted with India on key regional and international issues. Given the current sensitive conditions, these talks will be more in-depth and will explore new dimensions,” he noted.

Araghchi also confirmed plans to meet his Indian counterpart during the visit, underscoring the shared interest in de-escalating tensions in the region.

“Naturally, we seek a reduction in tensions and hope that all parties (India and Pakistan) will act with restraint to prevent further escalation. Our region needs calm, particularly to facilitate economic cooperation among regional countries,” he added.

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also provided further details of the visit on the social media platform X.

He confirmed that the foreign ministers of Iran and India are co-chairing the 20th session of the Joint Commission and will sign several cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening ties in the fields of trade, customs, and health.

Baghaei also emphasized the longstanding cultural and historical bonds between the two nations, stating that “these deep-rooted ties provide a solid foundation for expanding cooperation in line with the mutual interests of both nations.”

He concluded by reaffirming Iran’s commitment to enhancing joint efforts and coordination with India to promote peace, security, and stability both regionally and globally.
