Ashura Mourning in Iran
WANA (July 16)—Ashura, also known as the Day of Ashura, is a significant religious observance for Shia Muslims, particularly in Iran and other Shia-majority countries.
Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Imam Hussain’s death is seen as a symbol of resistance against tyranny and injustice.
