WANA (May 21) – Iran’s Judiciary announced that the execution of the individual convicted of attacking the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran was carried out on the morning of Wednesday, May 21.

On the morning of January 27, 2023, an armed individual attacked the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran. As a result, one Azerbaijani national was killed and two others were injured.

Following the incident, the head of Tehran’s Criminal Prosecutor’s Office arrived at the scene and stated that initial investigations suggested the attacker was motivated by personal reasons.

During early interrogations, the suspect claimed that in April of last year, his wife had gone to the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran and never returned home. Believing she was still at the embassy and refusing to see him, he decided to attack using a Kalashnikov rifle he had previously obtained.

After completing the investigation, the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office charged the defendant with premeditated murder of a foreign national using a firearm inside the embassy, illegal possession and use of firearms (including a Kalashnikov rifle and a handgun), and disturbing public order. The prosecution sought the maximum punishment.

Following multiple court sessions attended by the defendant and his lawyers, the court issued a death sentence (qisas). The case was then referred to the Supreme Court, which upheld the ruling.

With final confirmation from the Supreme Court, the sentence was carried out this morning.
