Azerbaijan Summons Iranian Envoy Over Media Disputes
WANA (Jan 25) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan announced that it has summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Iranian Embassy in Baku, Seyed Jafar Aghaei Miryan, on Saturday.
The meeting addressed what Baku described as a “campaign against Azerbaijan and its leadership in Iranian state-affiliated media outlets.” During the meeting, the Iranian chargé d’affaires expressed regret over certain remarks and actions and assured Baku that the matter would be conveyed to the relevant authorities in Iran.
On Friday, Ali Alizadeh, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Iran, met with Mojtaba Demirchi-Lou, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director General of Eurasian Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Tehran.
While Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry claimed that Tehran had summoned its ambassador to address what it called “baseless protests,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported a broader discussion on bilateral relations during the meeting.
The talks in Tehran touched on the current state and future outlook of relations between the two nations. Demirchi-Lou highlighted recent positive developments and stressed the importance of implementing bilateral agreements and safeguarding the growing ties between the countries.
He also condemned recent negative incidents, including what he described as an “immoral action” involving Iranian students in Azerbaijan, calling such moves harmful to the relationship between the two nations. Tehran expressed its strong objection to these incidents and urged action against those responsible.
The Iranian official emphasized the importance of respecting religious scholars and clerics, calling for vigilance against divisive actions and offensive behaviors.
In response, the Azerbaijani ambassador expressed regret over certain remarks and incidents and assured that the concerns would be communicated to his government.
Both sides positively assessed the recent progress in their relations, particularly the exchange of high-level delegations and the resumption of the Joint Economic Commission meetings after a three-year hiatus. They also discussed ways to enhance coordination and accelerate the implementation of planned initiatives to strengthen bilateral ties.
