WANA (Sep 25) – On Wednesday, the European Union issued a statement following a meeting between Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

Borrell underscored the importance of reviving nuclear diplomacy and reaffirmed his readiness as the coordinator of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to facilitate a diplomatic solution addressing the concerns of all parties involved.

Borrell noted the upcoming UN General Assembly as an opportunity for further JCPOA discussions. Despite Iran’s willingness to negotiate a lasting agreement that guarantees the lifting of sanctions, talks in Vienna stalled due to a lack of U.S. commitment. Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to engage if the JCPOA is fully implemented.

The EU statement also addressed international developments, including claims of Iran’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict. Borrell condemned the alleged transfer of Iranian missiles to Russia, though Tehran has repeatedly denied these accusations and supports a political resolution to the war.

Regarding the Middle East, Borrell and Araghchi discussed the urgent need to prevent a full-scale war, which could have devastating consequences for the region. Borrell urged Iran to leverage its influence to de-escalate tensions and prioritize a ceasefire and the release of hostages, which would significantly improve civilian conditions in Gaza.

In conclusion, both parties acknowledged the importance of dialogue to tackle geopolitical and bilateral challenges.
