WANA (July 11) – The International Relations Court of Tehran has issued a ruling condemning the U.S. government and its officials to pay $6.785 billion in material, moral, and punitive damages to the plaintiffs in the butterfly children case.

After 295 survivors and butterfly patients filed a lawsuit against 30 individuals and entities of the U.S. government involved in imposing and enforcing sanctions against these sick children, Branch 55 of the International Relations Court of Tehran held several sessions.

They reviewed documents related to the sanctions on these children and patients and consulted various experts.

The court found that the illegal sanctions led to crimes and caused unnecessary pain and suffering to these patients. Consequently, the court ruled that the U.S. government and its officials must pay $6.785 billion in material, moral, and punitive damages to the plaintiffs in this case.

Following the U.S. government’s withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, some U.S.-affiliated and European companies ceased trade with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Among these was the Swedish company Mölnlycke, the sole producer of dressings that heal and improve the wounds of butterfly children worldwide.

Upon the reimposition of sanctions by Donald Trump, Mölnlycke terminated its representation and all exchanges with Iran.

Approximately eight months after this decision, butterfly patients were left without any medication or ointments to heal and improve their severe and deep skin wounds. As a result, around 20 of these patients lost their lives, while the surviving patients continue to endure immense pain and suffering, along with irreparable physical damage.

During this period, the Iranian government, butterfly patients, and NGOs such as the EB Home made significant efforts to secure medications and ointments for these patients. However, all these efforts were in vain due to the lack of cooperation from the Swedish-American company Mölnlycke.
