WANA (Nov 10) – While the main focus of COP29 is on financial mechanisms to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, Iran remains deprived of the necessary technologies and financial resources to achieve these goals due to unlawful sanctions imposed by the United States. Iran plans to raise this issue during the conference as an act of protest against this unfair restriction.

 

The idea for a climate change convention dates back to 1992 when over 150 countries gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to address the harmful impacts of industrial greenhouse gas emissions.

 

Recognizing the irreversible effects of human activity on nature and public health, the need to compensate for this damage became evident. The Climate Change Convention was thus implemented in 1994, and Iran officially joined in 1996.

 

The Significance of COP29 for Iran

As a country significantly impacted by climate change, Iran views this summit as a valuable opportunity. Several meetings have been held in Iran to emphasize the importance of attending COP29 and to discuss Iran’s strategic approach for engaging effectively.

 

Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Deputy Strategic Adviser to the President, highlighted in one session, “Environmental issues have created a shared but differentiated responsibility among countries; those with a greater role in environmental damage today have more resources to combat it, while countries with a smaller impact are deprived of necessary resources.”

 

Zarif emphasizes that Iran’s presence at this summit provides a platform to defend its interests and remind the global community not to undermine the principle of “shared but differentiated responsibility.”

The Goals of COP29

The primary aim of this conference is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change impacts—a goal requiring substantial funding and advanced technologies. Developed nations have committed to providing around $100 billion for this purpose by 2025.

 

However, US financial and banking sanctions have severely limited Iran’s access to these funds. Therefore, one of the Iranian delegation’s key objectives at COP29 will be advocating for access to this financial support.

 

Iran’s Efforts to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Despite sanctions, Iran has taken significant steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For instance, it has developed a low-carbon economy roadmap and established a national climate change working group.

 

Shina Ansari, head of the Environmental Protection Organization, stresses Iran’s efforts, noting that, “Sanctions have hindered Iran’s access to environmental technologies and reduced its ability to cut greenhouse gas emissions.”

Climate Change Threats Looming Over Iran

The head of the Climate Change Research Institute at Dezful University warns that ignoring climate change could have irreversible consequences.

 

He states that by 2025, global warming could cause the death of 14.5 million people and lead to $12.5 trillion in damages. International organizations have also announced that 2023 has been the hottest year on record.

 

Iran’s Message at COP29: The Environment Knows No Borders

Khorsand, head of the International Affairs Center of the Environmental Protection Organization, believes that the global environment transcends national borders and that all countries should protect it in unison. He argues, “Other countries should not prevent Iran from accessing green and environmentally friendly technologies.”

 

Ultimately, Iran’s delegation at COP29 aims to call for an end to unfair sanctions and unilateral restrictions. Iran will also seize this opportunity to condemn Israel’s actions for their environmentally destructive impacts.
