WANA (Feb 05) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi emphasized that despite Israeli aggression and crimes, Hezbollah has maintained and strengthened its influence and presence in Lebanon’s political landscape.

His remarks came during a meeting with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, who traveled to Tehran for discussions on Lebanon’s political developments.

Support for Lebanon’s Political Process

During the meeting, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s firm and principled policy of supporting Lebanon’s government, people, and resistance movement.

He welcomed the completion of Lebanon’s political process and the election of a new president through national consensus and broad political participation. He also underlined the importance of maintaining national unity in the formation of the new government.

The foreign minister noted similarities between the current situation in Lebanon and the aftermath of Israel’s 33-day war in 2006, stressing that Hezbollah has remained a rooted and powerful force despite ongoing Israeli aggression.

UN Urged to Act Against Israeli Violations

Araghchi condemned Israel’s repeated ceasefire violations, calling them a serious threat to regional stability. He urged the United Nations to take a more active role in pressuring Israel to halt its attacks, withdraw from occupied Lebanese territories, and facilitate humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts.

UN Official Acknowledges Iran’s Regional Role

Hennis-Plasschaert provided an update on her recent regional and international consultations, emphasizing Iran’s crucial role in ensuring long-term stability in Lebanon and the broader region.

She expressed hope that with both sides committed to the ceasefire, conditions would improve for lasting stability, humanitarian assistance to displaced people, and the reconstruction of war-affected areas.
