WANA (Dec 09) – Two members of Iran’s Parliament presidium provided details about a closed-door session today to discuss regional developments and the situation in Syria. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and a majority of lawmakers attended the meeting. On Iran’s stance, they stated: “Iran’s approach to the new Syrian government will depend on the conduct of those who assume power.”

Ahmad Naderi stated, “The closed session focused on regional developments, the situation in Syria, and the factors leading to the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government.” He added that three parliamentarians presented their views during the session, to which Araqchi responded. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also provided a summary of the discussions.

Naderi highlighted Iran’s stance on Syria’s future governance: “Based on the discussions, Iran’s approach to the new Syrian government will depend on the conduct of those who assume power. Iran will adjust its policies accordingly.”

Another presidium member, Mohammad Rashidi, explained that Araghchi presented a detailed report on recent developments in Syria and the broader region.

Referring to Araghchi’s recent visit to Qatar, Rashidi noted, “The meeting in Qatar included Iran, Turkey, and Russia, with five additional Arab countries joining the discussions. While constructive decisions were made regarding Syria, the rapid pace of developments undermined the meeting’s outcomes, ultimately leading to the fall of the Syrian government.”
