Germany & UK’s Political Exploitation of Human Rights Condemned
WANA (Apr 04) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the continued misuse of human rights mechanisms by the UK, Germany, and other Western countries as a means of exerting political pressure on developing nations.
In a media statement, Ismail Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, condemned the initiative taken by the UK and Germany in leading the adoption of an anti-Iran resolution at the UN Human Rights Council. He criticized the resolution as legally and factually baseless, citing the ill intent of its drafters, the falsehood of the claims referenced, the broad generalizations and conclusions drawn from alleged isolated incidents, contradictions within the text, and unsubstantiated accusations attributed to anonymous sources.
This senior Iranian diplomat pointed to the track record of the UK, Germany, Canada, and other backers of the anti-Iran resolution over the past two years regarding various human rights crises in West Asia—particularly the genocide in Gaza and Israeli crimes against the people of Lebanon and Syria. He emphasized that the UK, which is among the largest political, financial, and military supporters of Israel—and whose foreign minister believes that proving genocide in Gaza would require the killing of millions—along with Germany, the second-largest supplier of arms used in Israel’s mass killings, and whose foreign minister openly justifies the killing of innocent Palestinian women and children, lack any moral standing to lecture others on human rights.
Baghaei reaffirmed Iran’s principled approach to upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms in accordance with its constitution, national laws, and international treaties ratified by the Iranian government. He stressed that as a system born from a popular revolution, and one that derives its legitimacy from public support, the Islamic Republic remains committed to protecting and advancing human rights, as well as identifying and addressing rights violations—including through appropriate legal and judicial measures.
He further highlighted Iran’s ongoing engagement with human rights mechanisms, including the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, to play an active role in promoting global human rights norms. He warned that the instrumentalization of the Human Rights Council by certain Western countries—particularly the UK and Germany—to impose political agendas on Iran undermines the credibility of the Council and disrupts cooperative and constructive international efforts on human rights. He urged the UK, Germany, and other Western sponsors of the anti-Iran resolution to demonstrate their sincerity in addressing human rights concerns by ceasing their adherence to the U.S.’s illegal and inhumane sanctions against the Iranian people, which amount to crimes against humanity.
