WANA (July 13) – The Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran stated that the most crucial topic discussed among BRICS members was confronting U.S. sanctions. He noted that BRICS countries account for over half of the world’s population and 30% of the global economic capacity.

On Friday evening, upon his return from the BRICS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly hosted in St. Petersburg, Russia, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also announced that the main topic of discussion with the Russian President was the North-South Corridor and the energy transmission line.

He added that the focus at BRICS was on combating unilateral U.S. sanctions, given that BRICS members hold more than half of the world’s population and 30% of the global economic capacity.

Ghalibaf emphasized that BRICS countries are establishing parallel institutions like SWIFT and conducting bilateral transactions in non-dollar currencies. During this trip, bilateral issues were also pursued with Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Armenia.

In meetings with Vladimir Putin and the heads of the Russian Duma and Federation Council, he stated that the North-South Corridor and energy cooperation were discussed in the follow-up on bilateral issues between Iran and Russia.

He pointed out that BRICS is not solely focused on economic issues but also cultural, sports, and scientific topics.

Highlighting the presence of major economic countries in BRICS, Ghalibaf noted that the most serious and important issue discussed at BRICS was the unilateral U.S. sanctions, which are not endorsed by international laws.

On July 10, 2024, Ghalibaf, at the invitation of Vyacheslav Volodin and Valentina Matviyenko, Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, embarked on this trip to participate and speak at the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.

Last year, the Islamic Republic of Iran and three other countries joined BRICS, making a total of nine countries from emerging global powers that have joined this pact. This marks the first presence of a high-ranking Iranian official in the BRICS general assemblies since the country’s full membership in this important alliance.

BRICS is an international group led by emerging economic powers, including China, India, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa. With nearly half the world’s population, about 40% of the global economic capacity, and rich human and natural resources, BRICS holds substantial potential to influence the global economy.

At the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg in early September 2023, five countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia, were accepted as members. These countries became official members of the organization in early 2024.
