Grossi: IAEA Committed to Playing a Constructive Role
WANA (Apr 17) – During his two-day visit to Tehran, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reaffirmed the UN nuclear watchdog’s commitment to facilitating diplomatic solutions to disputes among member states.
“We are determined to play a constructive role in resolving differences through diplomatic tools,” Grossi said. “What matters is our honest effort to fulfill our responsibilities and help countries with serious disagreements resolve them through diplomacy.”
In an interview following his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Grossi emphasized that the IAEA’s involvement is not about satisfying all sides equally, but about engaging in a sincere process. “Some may say the outcome is good, others may say it’s not good enough — but the important point is that our efforts are genuine and focused on doing the right thing.”
Grossi also stressed the importance of preventing the political exploitation of Iran’s nuclear program. “The Agency will work closely with Iran to ensure that the issue is not misused by other countries for political purposes,” he stated.
Referring to global tensions, Grossi described the current international climate as “crisis-ridden,” and said his visit to Tehran was intended to support ongoing efforts by Iran and the United States to reach a sustainable agreement — one that he said would contribute to global security.
Grossi also called the threat of targeting nuclear facilities unacceptable.
During his stay in Tehran, which took place just days before the second round of indirect nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington, Grossi met with Foreign Minister Araghchi and Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.
The first round of these negotiations was held on Saturday in Muscat, the capital of Oman, with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi acting as mediator.
