WANA (Oct 19) – The IMEX 2024 naval drill has commenced in the First Naval Zone of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Army, with the participation of naval forces from Indian Ocean littoral countries.

Led by Iran’s Navy and in cooperation with the IRGC Navy, Iranian Border Guard, and Ports and Maritime Organization, the exercise includes Russia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Pakistan, Qatar, and Bangladesh.

The spokesperson for the drill, Rear Admiral Mostafa Tajeddini, announced that both member and observer nations are taking part in the exercise, with some sending naval vessels to participate directly.

The drill features specialized sessions and workshops initiated by Iran, focusing on experience-sharing. During the naval journey, participating forces will conduct specialized exercises, including fire control, search and rescue operations, and oil spill containment.

Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) has aimed to enhance maritime cooperation among regional states to address non-traditional security challenges. Tajeddini noted that Iran and India co-chair two key committees on security and humanitarian actions.

The exercise, held under the motto “Together for a Safe and Secure Indian Ocean,” promotes peace, friendship, and collective collaboration among the nations involved.
