Iran Condemns France for Hosting MEK Meeting
WANA (Jan 11) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned France for hosting a meeting of the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), labeling it a clear example of supporting terrorism and a violation of France’s international legal obligations to prevent and combat terrorism.
In a public statement, Ismail Baghaei referred to the MEK’s history of terrorist activities, which have claimed the lives of thousands of innocent Iranians and injured many others. He also highlighted the group’s collaboration with Saddam Hussein’s regime during the eight-year Iran-Iraq war.
Baghaei stated that the continued presence and activities of MEK members in France breach France’s international commitments under counter-terrorism conventions and UN Security Council Resolution 1373. Furthermore, he said these actions contradict the “fundamental principles of international law concerning friendly relations and cooperation among states as outlined in the UN Charter.”
The senior Iranian diplomat criticized France’s selective approach to terrorism, calling it a “wrongful act” that incurs France’s international responsibility. He also described it as morally reprehensible and inconsistent with human rights standards.
Baghaei added that granting permission for a terrorist group to hold a meeting constitutes explicit participation in promoting violence, inciting hatred, and interfering in Iran’s internal affairs. He emphasized that such actions by the French government are in clear contradiction to human rights principles, fundamental international law, and the UN Charter.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson underscored the necessity for all governments to adhere to their international legal obligations to prevent and combat terrorism. He called on France to fulfill these commitments and refrain from aiding or facilitating terrorist activities in any form.
