WANA (Nov 19) – Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, strongly condemned the recent sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United Kingdom on several Iranian individuals and entities, including the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.

The sanctions were justified by allegations of Iran supplying ballistic missiles to Russia—claims that Baghaei described as “unfounded, unjustifiable, and in violation of international law.”

Rejecting the allegations, Baghaei pointed out that even Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that no Iranian ballistic missiles have been transferred to Russia. He added, “The EU and UK’s actions lack any legitimacy, legal basis, or logical justification.”

Baghaei also criticized the sanctions targeting Iran’s civil aviation and the shipping industry, stating they infringe on the fundamental rights of Iranian citizens and represent systematic human rights violations. “These sanctions impose direct harm on the Iranian people and constitute a clear breach of international law, making the EU and UK accountable under international responsibility,” he said.

The Iranian official emphasized that freedom of navigation and maritime trade are fundamental principles of international maritime law. He accused European parties of violating these principles, asserting that their actions are “legally indefensible.”

Baghaei also denounced the EU and UK’s “interventionist policies” in sovereign states’ legitimate defense and military affairs. He reiterated Iran’s commitment to leveraging all available resources and partnerships to safeguard its national interests and security.
