Iran Condemns New U.S. Sanctions as Hostile
WANA (Apr 23) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has strongly condemned the latest round of sanctions imposed by the United States on individuals and entities connected to Iran’s energy, oil, and gas sectors, as well as on those involved in the country’s peaceful nuclear program.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Baghaei denounced Washington’s continued resort to sanctions as a clear reflection of its hostile approach toward the Iranian people, accusing U.S. policymakers of disregarding the rule of law and fundamental human rights.
Baghaei described the U.S. policy of imposing sanctions against the Iranian people as a clear indication of the hostile approach adopted by American policymakers toward the people of Iran and their disregard for the rule of law and human rights.
He added: “The structural dependence of U.S. administrations on economic sanctions against developing countries as a tool for intimidation and political pressure violates the fundamental principles and norms of the United Nations Charter and international law.”
“ In addition to undermining the foundations of the rule of law and the principles of free trade, it results in gross violations of the fundamental human rights of the sanctioned populations—particularly the right to development—and in many cases constitutes a crime against humanity,” he continued.
Baghaei further described the continued imposition of sanctions on Iran’s economic and commercial sectors as “bullying and illegal,” asserting that it starkly contradicts the U.S. government’s repeated claims of seeking dialogue and negotiations with Iran. “These actions reveal a lack of goodwill and seriousness on the part of the United States,” he added.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman concluded by emphasizing that the unilateral sanctions against Iran are unlawful, arbitrary, and inconsistent with the foundations of international legal norms. “The U.S. government bears international responsibility for these flagrant violations of human rights and must be held accountable for the criminal consequences of its actions,” he said.
As indirect negotiations with Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program continue, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced several new rounds of sanctions targeting Iran.
