WANA (Apr 15) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baqaei, condemned the siege of El Fasher in North Darfur, Sudan, and attacks on defenseless civilians sheltering in Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps.

Expressing deep concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation, he called for an end to the siege, cessation of hostilities, and protection of civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Baqaei reiterated the Islamic Republic of Iran’s principled stance in support of Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

The paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has taken control of the Zamzam refugee camp after several days of intense fighting. Human rights organizations had earlier reported that a new wave of RSF attacks near the city of El Fasher left hundreds dead or wounded.

On Monday, the United Nations stated that preliminary figures from local sources indicate more than 300 civilians were killed during clashes around the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps and the city of El Fasher on Friday and Saturday.

According to the UN, around 400,000 residents of Zamzam camp have been forced to flee their shelters. Since the outbreak of Sudan’s civil war in April 2023, approximately 13 million people have been displaced, with about 3.8 million fleeing to neighboring countries.
