Iran Criticizes U.S. Re-listing of Cuba as State Sponsor of Terrorism
WANA (Jan 23) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Baghaei, has condemned the United States’ decision to re-list Cuba as a so-called state sponsor of terrorism, calling the move “unjustified, baseless, and unacceptable.” Esmail Baghaei stated that such unilateral actions undermine the rule of law internationally and promote lawlessness.
In response to the U.S. re-adding Cuba to its list of countries allegedly supporting terrorism, Baghaei emphasized that the U.S. has a long history of using unfounded and arbitrary lists to defame independent nations as a tool for advancing its foreign policy. He described these actions as contrary to international law and norms, serving as a pretext for imposing unilateral and unjust sanctions against independent nations.
Baghaei further argued that such unilateral measures by a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council not only violate the fundamental human rights of the Cuban people but also weaken the international rule of law and encourage lawbreaking. He called for the international community to oppose these actions.
According to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump reversed the decision of his predecessor, Joe Biden, to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism just hours after taking office. The Biden administration had recently removed Cuba from the list in a delayed move last week.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel also reacted strongly to the U.S. decision, stating that President Trump, in an act of arrogance and disregard for the truth, has once again fraudulently labeled Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism. Díaz-Canel expressed no surprise, asserting that Trump’s goal is to continue intensifying the unjust economic war against Cuba for the purposes of domination.
The Cuban president described the move as “ridiculous and abusive,” further confirming the discredit of unilateral and coercive U.S. mechanisms and lists. He reiterated that such actions only highlight the U.S. government’s disregard for international norms and its pursuit of hegemony.
