Iran Develops Rapid Test Kits for Colorectal Cancer Detection
WANA (Jan 01) – A leading Iranian technology company has developed and introduced rapid test kits for detecting colorectal cancer, enabling swift and efficient screening. So far, over 600,000 people have used these kits under a national screening program, with plans to expand their application across the country.
Rising Global Cancer Rates
According to the World Health Organization, only 15% of reported cancer cases occurred in developing countries in 1970. By 1980, this figure had risen to 56% and is projected to reach 70% by 2030.
In Iran, approximately 12,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed annually. The Ministry of Health mandates annual screenings for individuals over 50 or those with a family history of the disease. For those with familial risk factors, the recommended screening age is 10 years younger than the general population.
Iranian Researchers Develop High-Precision Breast Cancer Detection Device
WANA (Dec 15) – An Iranian knowledge-based company has developed an innovative device called the Cancer Diagnostic Probe (CDP), enabling non-invasive detection of breast cancer. According to the company’s project development manager, the CDP device boasts a detection accuracy of over 93%, allowing surgeons to identify cancerous cells during breast cancer surgeries and prevent […]
The Need for Alternative Screening Methods
Colonoscopy is the standard method for detecting colorectal cancer, but its invasive nature often deters individuals. As a result, non-invasive, affordable, and quick diagnostic methods are increasingly favored. Rapid test kits offer a superior alternative, meeting these criteria.
Overcoming Sanctions with Local Innovation
Previously, Iran relied on imported rapid test kits from a German manufacturer. However, sanctions disrupted supply chains, prompting a domestic company to develop high-precision nanotechnology-based kits (PKM2 and FOB) with over 90% accuracy. Domestic production has eliminated the $300,000 annual expenditure on imports.
Scaling Up Screening Efforts
Last year, Iran’s healthcare centers began screening three million individuals nationwide, using these locally produced kits for over 600,000 participants. Early detection is critical as colorectal cancer typically shows no symptoms in its initial stages. Screening can lead to early diagnosis, cost-effective treatment, and significantly lower mortality rates.
Iran Develops World’s First Full-blood Dialysis Device for Cancer
WANA (August 04) – Fatemeh Molaabbasi, a faculty member at the Cancer Research Center of Jihad University in Iran, announced the development of the world’s first full-blood dialysis device for cancer patients, aimed at both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Fatemeh Molaabbasi, the project lead, stated that current methods for isolating circulating tumor cells (CTCs) […]
Features and Benefits of Rapid Test Kits
The rapid test kits are designed for simplicity and efficiency:
- Non-invasive: Requires no advanced equipment or complex sample preparation.
- Quick results: Results are visible to the naked eye within 10-20 minutes.
- Accessible: Usable in all regions without requiring laboratory facilities or specialists.
- Affordable: Cost-effective and ideal for community-wide screening programs.
Transformative Impact on Healthcare
Rapid test kits are a vital tool in public health systems, directly influencing 66% of clinical decisions while accounting for only 2.3% of healthcare expenditures.
By offering a practical and scalable solution for colorectal cancer detection, these innovative kits are set to revolutionize cancer screening in Iran and beyond.
