WANA (May 08) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met with Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday in New Delhi, where he expressed Iran’s readiness to assist in reducing tensions and promoting calm in the South Asian region.

 

Araghchi, who is in India to hold high-level consultations and participate in the 20th session of the Iran-India Joint Commission, underscored the deep-rooted historical and civilizational ties between the two nations.

 

He emphasized Tehran’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across all areas of mutual interest and provided a detailed account of the discussions and outcomes of the Joint Commission meeting.

 

Referring to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Iranian foreign minister reiterated Iran’s principled stance against all forms of terrorism and noted that Tehran swiftly condemned the incident.

 

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, based on its longstanding policies, is firmly committed to peace and stability in South Asia,” Araghchi said. He added that Iran urges all parties to avoid any actions that could escalate tensions and expressed Iran’s readiness to assist in reducing tensions.

President Murmu, in turn, thanked Iran for its principled position and solidarity in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. She highlighted the strong historical and cultural foundations of Iran-India relations, which have flourished over the past 75 years since the signing of the Treaty of Friendship.

 

Murmu also expressed sorrow over the recent explosion at Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port, offering condolences to the families of the victims and the people and government of Iran. She wished a swift recovery for the injured.

 

Araghchi also met this evening with Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, for discussions on bilateral relations, as well as regional and international developments.

 

During the 90-minute meeting, both sides emphasized the need to safeguard peace and stability in South Asia and stressed the importance of taking necessary measures to reduce tensions in the region.
