WANA (Dec 18) – Iran has identified Turkmenistan and Russia as key sources of gas imports, with negotiations for contracts ongoing with both countries.

However, discussions regarding the import or swap of Turkmen gas, which has been in progress since the previous administration, remain unresolved. This delay appears to stem from either logistical challenges or Turkmenistan’s reluctance to send gas to Iran.

While many anticipated an agreement on gas imports with Turkmenistan ahead of the winter season, Iran’s Energy Minister announced a deal to import electricity from the country instead.

Details about the volume of electricity imports have not been disclosed, but the minister confirmed that a maximum-capacity electricity import agreement has been signed with Turkmenistan, with supplies set to continue until summer.

Given the strain on Iran’s power grid caused by insufficient fuel supply to power plants, any level of electricity imports from Turkmenistan could help mitigate blackouts in northern regions. However, critical questions remain unanswered, including the specifics of the contract and whether Turkmenistan might repeat its past behavior of unilaterally withdrawing from agreements.
