Iran Joins the Ranks of Top 20 Film-Producing Countries
WANA (July 23) – Iran has emerged as one of the top 20 economies in film production, playing a significant role in the global cinema industry.
Amir Abbas Mohammadi Koushki, Head of Iran’s Inventions Team, highlighted a 2024 report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), noting the rapid rebound of the global film industry from the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the latest data from WIPO and Omdia, film production saw significant growth in 2022 and 2023, although it has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels.
Discussing the status of film production and sales in Iran and leading countries, Mohammadi stated that India, with nearly 2,500 films produced in 2022, accounts for 29% of global production, securing its position as the world’s top film producer. The United States follows, producing one-third the number of films compared to India, holding second place.
He pointed out that the US contributed about 10% of all global feature film productions in 2022. Japan ranked third, with an increase of 144 films from the previous year, accounting for 7% of global production.
A member of the official UN statistics team, Mohammadi noted that China ranks fourth, producing 6% of global films in 2022, with local productions comprising 85% of China’s box office revenue in 2023.
Referring to Iran’s ranking, Mohammadi stated that Iran, as one of the top 20 economies in film production, plays a significant role in the global cinema industry. He emphasized that Iran’s film production has seen substantial growth in both quantity and quality.
Mohammadi also provided data on global film sales, highlighting that global box office revenue increased by 29.4% in 2023, reaching $33.2 billion. However, this figure is still $9 billion less than the peak year of 2019, representing only 80% of the levels seen between 2017 and 2019.
He stressed that the robust recovery of the global cinema industry post-pandemic demonstrates its vitality and strength. With increased film production in leading countries like India, the US, Japan, China, and Iran, it is expected that the cinema industry will swiftly return to its pre-pandemic state. This resurgence can bolster the cultural economy of nations and elevate their status on the international stage.
