Iran Launches Helium Extraction Project from Natural Gas
WANA (Feb 19) – The pilot project for the extraction and purification of helium from natural gas was officially inaugurated with the presence of Mohammad Islami, Vice President of Iran, along with several deputy officials from the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and employees from the nuclear industry.
Given the strategic importance of helium in various industries, the dedicated experts of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran completed the initial feasibility phase and conceptual design of the helium extraction, purification, and liquefaction unit by the end of summer 2022. Following this, with the directive of Mohammad Islami, the design and construction of the unit officially began in the second half of 2022.
During the inauguration, Islami emphasized that this technological expertise was achieved in collaboration with one of the country’s universities. All necessary components and equipment were manufactured by the AEOI and supplied through the country’s domestic engineering network.
He highlighted, “This initiative has been entirely carried out by Iranian youth, and it involves both technological and engineering know-how, as well as domestic equipment. The country has entered this industry relying on local capabilities, and the capacity we are establishing will be sufficient to meet the nation’s annual needs and eliminate the need for imports.”
