Iran Offers Expertise in SCO’s Fight Against Drug Trafficking
WANA (Jan 29) – Alireza Haghighian, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Tajikistan, recognized the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for its effective mechanisms in combating drug trafficking and psychotropic substances. He also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to sharing its significant and valuable experiences in the fight against drugs with fellow SCO member states.
The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Tajikistan participated in an international roundtable titled “Shanghai Cooperation Organization Towards a Healthy Society Free from Drugs” on Wednesday, January 29.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Academy of Public Administration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Drug Control Agency, and the Friendship and Cooperation Center of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tajikistan.
In his speech, Ambassador Haghighian emphasized the importance of tackling drug-related issues and stressed the necessity for collective, integrated, and targeted actions at both the regional and global levels to address this worldwide challenge.
The ambassador highlighted the SCO’s effective mechanisms and ongoing initiatives aimed at combating drug trafficking and psychotropic substances. He also reiterated the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the establishment of a Drug Control Office in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, under the SCO framework.
Haghighian further outlined Iran’s capacity and expertise in this field, reaffirming the country’s readiness to share its rich and significant experience with SCO member states.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is a permanent intergovernmental international organization.
Its primary objectives include fostering mutual trust and good neighborliness among member states, enhancing cooperation in various sectors such as politics, trade, economy, science, technology, and culture, and addressing issues like education, energy, transport, tourism, and environmental protection.
The SCO also aims to ensure and maintain peace, security, and stability in the region, moving towards a new democratic, fair, and rational international political and economic order.
Within the organization, SCO member countries adhere to the “Shanghai Spirit,” which promotes consensus, mutual trust, mutually beneficial cooperation, equality, mutual consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and the pursuit of common development. In its external relations, the SCO is committed to principles of openness, non-alignment with blocks, and non-confrontation with third countries.
