“As a new member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Iran actively participated in its 24th summit held in Astana on July 3-4, 2024. Iran emphasized the importance of effective and enhanced cooperation between the United Nations and the SCO.

The representative noted that drug trafficking and other forms of transnational organized crime are significant concerns for Iran, providing opportunities for practical engagements between the UN and the SCO.

With its multilateral structure, the SCO can actively contribute to international efforts by developing regional capacities and assisting national governments in combating terrorism and extremism.”

“The SCO also supports international efforts in conflict prevention and resolution, combatting terrorism through its Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure, preventing transnational crimes, fighting illicit drug trafficking, and ensuring international information security,” Iravani added.

He stressed the shared view that strengthening this partnership is essential for effectively countering terrorism, transnational crimes, and other traditional and emerging threats, ultimately contributing to global peace and development.

Iravani expressed support for the close cooperation between the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and SCO member states in combating illegal drug trafficking and organized crime. He mentioned that joint initiatives, capacity-building programs, and information exchange will enhance the ability to disrupt criminal networks and mitigate the impact on communities.

Regarding the challenges in Afghanistan, Iravani expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation between the United Nations and the SCO could significantly bolster stability and development in Afghanistan. Through joint efforts in security, economic development, humanitarian assistance, political support, and regional integration, the UN and the SCO can help build a more stable and prosperous Afghanistan. Joint infrastructure projects could further boost Afghanistan’s economic growth.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to fully participate in dialogue and cooperation within the SCO and the United Nations framework to address immediate challenges and promote peace and security in the region,” Iravani concluded.
