Iran-Russia Treaty: A Landmark in Bilateral Relations
WANA (Jan 21) – The Iranian Ambassador to the Russian Federation described President Masoud Pezeshkian’s recent visit to Moscow as highly operational and emphasized the significant reception by Russian economic players during a meeting with the Iranian president.
The ambassador noted that prior to this trip, it had been communicated that the comprehensive agreement between Iran and Russia was not confidential and would soon be published.
This promise was fulfilled during the visit. He further clarified that the agreement was a broad and inclusive treaty, countering claims from Western-oriented narratives that sought to frame it as focused solely on military and security issues. With the publication of the treaty text, it is now evident that the agreement is comprehensive and addresses various domains.
Historic Treaty with Far-Reaching Implications
The ambassador stressed the significance of the visit, particularly as it resulted in the signing of a comprehensive strategic agreement between Iran and Russia. He described this as a historic milestone that provides a legal framework to guide bilateral relations across multiple sectors for the next 20 years.
He contrasted this agreement with previous treaties signed with Tsarist Russia and other periods, which were often accepted under conditions of weakness. This time, the strategic treaty was drafted at a high level, emphasizing shared neighborhood ties and mutual approaches to regional and international issues.
The ambassador explained that the initial draft of the treaty was prepared by Iran and then enriched through extensive collaboration with Russian counterparts, culminating in the final signed document.
Parliamentary Ratification and Strategic Cooperation
Highlighting the next steps, the ambassador expressed hope for swift ratification of the agreement by the Iranian Parliament and the Russian legislative bodies to facilitate its implementation.
In addition to the treaty’s signing, the ambassador emphasized the importance of addressing all aspects of bilateral relations and resolving obstacles during President Pezeshkian’s meetings with Russian officials. The presence of a delegation of Iranian ministers and executive officials enabled productive discussions on a wide range of topics.
Comprehensive Dialogue and Economic Engagement
During the meetings in the Kremlin, ministers from both countries outlined progress and challenges, with the two presidents consolidating discussions. Key areas of cooperation, including energy, technology, agriculture, peaceful nuclear energy, monetary and financial matters, trade agreements, transit, and customs, were reviewed in detail.
The ambassador noted that the visit was remarkably operational, equating its impact on resolving bilateral challenges to the results of 20 separate trips by officials. The discussions provided clarity and transparency in advancing bilateral ties.
Economic Forum with Russian Stakeholders
President Pezeshkian also participated in a meeting with leading Russian economic actors. Despite the timing of the event—just days into Russia’s new business year—the turnout was impressive, with a full-capacity venue hosting high-level economic stakeholders.
During the session, Russian business leaders shared their concerns and opportunities with the Iranian president and ministers, while the Iranian delegation offered clear responses and proposals. President Pezeshkian also presented his vision for economic collaboration, which was well received by participants.
Media and Cultural Engagement
The ambassador highlighted President Pezeshkian’s media engagements, including a detailed interview with a prominent Russian broadcaster, set to air on a major Russian network. These efforts further conveyed the message of the Iranian nation and contributed to strengthening cultural ties.
President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Moscow on Friday, January 17, 2025, as part of his second leg of a tour that also included Tajikistan. During the visit, he held high-level talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, culminating in the signing of the comprehensive strategic treaty between the two nations.
