WANA (Sep 24) – During a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s commitment to foster lasting peace and security in the region, with the support of neighbouring governments, particularly those in the Persian Gulf.

Highlighting his electoral campaign slogan of “national unity and global engagement,” Pezeshkian condemned Israel’s actions, particularly the assassination of “Haniyeh,” who was a formal guest of Iran. He stated, “We have exercised patience to prevent escalation, but attacks on Gaza and Lebanon have raised serious concerns in the region.”

Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s commitment to establishing lasting peace and security, especially with neighbouring Persian Gulf states, and reiterated that Iran has never pursued nuclear weapons and has not initiated any wars in the past 200 years.

Guterres, in turn, conveyed his condolences to the Iranian people and congratulated Bezzarqan on gaining their trust. He underscored the urgent need to halt the violence in Gaza, stating, “The atrocities and mass killings of Palestinians in Gaza are completely unjustifiable, and their rights must be fully upheld.”

Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for Guterres’ condolences regarding the recent deaths of Iranian miners in the Tabas mine explosion, attributing the tragedy to “unjust sanctions” and the prohibition of equipment imports into Iran.

The UN Secretary-General also expressed satisfaction with the improving relations between Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, emphasizing the historical and cultural significance of Iran.
