Iran Urges Expulsion of Israel from UN and Calls for Arms Embargo
WANA (Nov 10) – At a joint meeting of foreign ministers from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League in Riyadh, focused on ongoing Israeli aggression in Palestine and Lebanon, Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for International Legal Affairs, has called for the expulsion of Israel from the United Nations and an arms embargo against the country.
During the meeting, held ahead of a special summit of Arab and Islamic leaders, Gharibabadi thanked Saudi Arabia for convening the emergency summit amidst the region’s critical situation. He described recent events in Gaza and Lebanon as a “disgrace to humanity” and an added injustice against a people who have been under occupation and deprived of fundamental rights for over seven decades.
Gharibabadi condemned the full support of the United States and Western countries for Israel, citing alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, racial discrimination, and genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.
He stated that Israel, “as the illegitimate child of the West,” has evaded accountability, while the Palestinian people possess the legitimate right to resist occupation and aggression without needing permission from any party.
He acknowledged the collective and individual efforts of member states but expressed that these actions were insufficient, urging more practical and effective measures to stop Israel’s “crimes.”
Gharibabadi also emphasized the need for immediate ceasefires in Palestine and Lebanon, the reopening of humanitarian corridors, the release of all Palestinian prisoners, the dignified return of refugees, and international aid for reconstruction in Gaza.
He further argued that Israel’s hostile actions, such as tearing up the UN Charter, designating the UN Secretary-General as “persona non grata,” banning UNRWA’s activities in occupied territories, killing UN staff, and disregarding International Court of Justice orders, violate the UN Charter, especially Article 2. Gharibabadi claimed it is now time for Israel’s expulsion from the United Nations.
He called on OIC and Arab League member states to impose comprehensive arms, economic, and trade sanctions on Israel and its supporters and advocated for the re-establishment of the UN Apartheid Committee to address Israeli crimes.
Gharibabadi urged strong condemnation of Israel’s regional aggressions, including in Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, characterizing them as part of a deliberate strategy to expand warfare throughout the region.
