Iran Urges UK to Respect Rights of Detained Iranian Citizens
WANA (May 07) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has called on the United Kingdom to respect the rights of Iranian nationals arrested in recent counterterrorism operations and ensure they receive fair legal proceedings.
In a statement posted Wednesday on the social media platform X, Araghchi expressed deep concern over the detention of several Iranian nationals by British security services.
He wrote: “Disturbed to learn that Iranian citizens have reportedly been arrested by UK security services.”
“If credible allegations of misconduct are established, Iran stands ready to assist investigations,” he added.
Araghchi emphasized that Iran expects the UK to uphold the rights of its nationals. “We call on UK to ensure respect for our citizens’ rights and afford them due process,” he said.
The Arrest Background of Iranian Citizens arrested in the UK
London police have announced the arrest of seven Iranian nationals suspected of involvement in terrorism-related offenses during two separate operations.
According to a statement by the Metropolitan Police, the arrests took place in London, Swindon, and Greater Manchester and are linked to “a suspected plot to target a specific location.”
In total, eight men—seven of whom are Iranian nationals—were arrested on suspicion of preparing for a terrorist act. They are between the ages of 29 and 46 and remain in custody. The nationality of one of the suspects is still under investigation, according to counterterrorism police.
