Iranian Film Festival Kicks Off in Croatia
WANA (Apr 05) – The Iranian Film Festival, organized by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Croatia, is currently underway in Zagreb, running from April 3 to April 6. The festival opened with an inaugural ceremony attended by Iranian cinema enthusiasts, Croatian cultural and government officials, and resident diplomats.
In his welcoming remarks, Mohsen Attaollahi, the Chargé d’Affaires of Iran in Zagreb, highlighted the international recognition of Iranian cinema, citing major awards from prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and the Oscars as proof of the artistic value and universal appeal of Iranian films.
“Iranian cinema is known for its pure aesthetics, symbolic storytelling, and deep emotional expression,” said Attaollahi, emphasizing that Iran’s film industry combines art and narrative to reflect the nation’s rich culture, history, and profound human experiences. He noted that with the annual production of over 100 films, Iran is among the few countries with a strong and independent national film industry.
Attaollahi continued that themes such as identity, social justice, ethics, family, and internal human struggles are at the heart of Iranian cinema. He stressed that critical reflection on social realities in Iranian films often aims to inspire progress toward a better society and world.
He added that Iranian films stand out because of their poetic nature, subtle symbolism, and powerful messaging. “Iranian directors are renowned for exploring global issues through metaphor and silence,” he said.
Attaollahi concluded by expressing hope that Croatian audiences’ growing interest in Iranian cinema will ensure the continuation of this cultural bridge. “We hope this window opened tonight into Iranian culture remains open and that the Iranian Film Week becomes a lasting and recognized annual event in Croatia,” he remarked.
The festival, held in celebration of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, features a curated selection of five feature films, one documentary, and three short animated films, offering Croatian audiences a glimpse into the depth and diversity of Iranian storytelling.
