Iran’s FM Urges Singapore to Reconsider Death Penalty for Iranian Citizen
WANA (Nov 28) – In a phone call with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi discussed bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen ties between the two countries. A key focus of the conversation was the case of Masoud Rahimi, an Iranian citizen sentenced to death in Singapore.
During the call, Araghchi emphasized the strong relations between Iran and Singapore, referencing prior diplomatic efforts by the late Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and follow-ups by Iran’s embassy regarding Rahimi’s case. He called on Singapore to reconsider Rahimi’s death sentence, citing humanitarian concerns while respecting the country’s legal framework.
Rahimi was arrested 15 years ago on drug trafficking charges and sentenced to death following legal proceedings. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as part of its consular responsibilities, has actively sought to provide assistance and advocate for clemency in his case. It is worth noting that Singapore regards Rahimi as a Singaporean citizen under its domestic laws.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to supporting Iranian nationals abroad and urged Singapore to consider leniency in Rahimi’s sentencing based on humanitarian grounds.
