WANA (Apr 17) – Upon his arrival in Moscow on Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi spoke to reporters, detailing the objectives behind his official visit to Russia, which comes at a crucial juncture amid evolving diplomatic efforts and regional tensions.

Araghchi explained that the visit had been scheduled in advance, primarily to deliver a written message from Iran’s Supreme Leader to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“This visit was pre-arranged for conveying the Supreme Leader’s message,” he said, “but it now coincides with recent developments, including the ongoing indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States.”

Close Coordination with Russia and China on Nuclear Issues

Araghchi emphasized Iran’s longstanding consultation and coordination with Russia on nuclear matters. “We have always maintained close consultations with our Russian friends, as well as with China, to align our positions,” he said. “Now is a fitting opportunity to continue that dialogue with Russian officials.”

Wide-Ranging Agenda: Bilateral, Regional, and Global

Highlighting the multifaceted nature of Iran-Russia relations, Araghchi noted that each meeting with Russian officials involves a broad range of topics. “We will follow up on economic projects and political discussions,” he stated. “We also plan to consult on developments in West Asia, including Israeli crimes, regional threats, and the situation in Ukraine.”

Strategic Partnership Agreement Advancing

Responding to a question about the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Iran and Russia, Araghchi described it as a major milestone in bilateral ties. “This treaty is very significant and elevates our relationship to a new level,” he said. “Our ties have always been strategic, and this agreement brings a structured and institutional framework to that relationship.”

He welcomed the progress of the treaty in Russia’s legislative bodies and said the process is also moving forward in Iran. “One of the key features of this treaty is its long-term strategic vision, offering a roadmap that ensures future cooperation remains unaffected by external powers,” he added. “Any emerging issues will be discussed bilaterally, but our outlook on relations with Russia remains long-term and comprehensive.”

Message from the Supreme Leader

Regarding the content of the Supreme Leader’s message to the Russian president, Araghchi said it naturally addresses major international and regional developments, as well as bilateral matters.
