WANA (Nov 09) – An Iranian team of researchers from Royan Biotechnology Institute in Isfahan has developed an innovative wound dressing that could eliminate the need for radiotherapy in skin cancer patients after tumor removal surgery.

Typically, cancer cells left in the wound area post-surgery increase the risk of recurrence, and radiotherapy is used to target these cells. However, this new product utilizes infrared laser therapy at set intervals to apply targeted heat, effectively destroying any remaining cancer cells.

Mustafa Noqabi, a tech developer from the startup, explains that even if no cancer cells remain in the wound, the controlled heat aids in faster healing, offering a dual benefit.

Currently, in clinical and animal testing, the product is on the path to commercialization, marking a pioneering advancement for Iran, as similar products abroad are still at the research stage. Backed by Iran’s Nano Technology Headquarters and scientific grants, the startup showcased this promising product at Iran’s Nano Exhibition.
