WANA (Feb 11) – Amir Saeid Iravani, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, has submitted a letter to the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General regarding statements made by U.S. President Donald TrumpDonald Trump.

The text of the letter is as follows:

New York – February 11, 2025

Acting upon instructions from my government, I am writing to draw the attention of the United Nations Security Council to the deeply concerning and irresponsible remarks made by the President of the United States. He has publicly threatened the Islamic Republic of Iran with the use of force. According to the New York Post, the U.S. President has stated: “I would rather reach an agreement with Iran on non-nuclear issues than bomb them. They don’t want to die; nobody wants to die.”

Furthermore, in an interview with Fox News on Monday, February 10, 2025, he reiterated the same belligerent rhetoric, declaring: “I prefer to reach an agreement with them without bombing.” He then added: “There are two ways to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons: bombing or a signed piece of paper.”

These reckless and provocative statements constitute a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, which explicitly prohibits the threat or use of force against sovereign states. Such provocative actions have been further escalated through the so-called “maximum pressure” policy, as outlined in the National Security Presidential Memorandum dated February 4, 2025. This policy entails the imposition of unlawful unilateral sanctions and the intensification of hostilities against Iran, flagrantly violating fundamental principles and norms of international law.

The Islamic Republic of Iran firmly rejects and strongly condemns this reckless threat. The United Nations Security Council must not remain silent in the face of such explicit rhetoric about the threat of force. Normalizing the threat of military aggression sets a dangerous precedent that must be unequivocally condemned.

The Islamic Republic of Iran warns that any act of aggression will have severe consequences, for which the United States will bear full responsibility. As a responsible member of the United Nations committed to maintaining international peace, security, and cooperation, Iran will resolutely defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests against any hostile action.

I would be grateful if this letter could be circulated and registered as an official document of the Security Council.

Please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.
