WANA (Sep 11) – Ali Akbar Ahmadian, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated that BRICS, with its population, economy, and power, has the potential to pioneer a new international security structure to contribute to the security of the future world.

On Wednesday, during a speech at the high-level security officials’ meeting of BRICS member countries in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Ahmadian proposed the formation of a security structure specifically for BRICS, named the “BRICS Security Commission.”

He emphasized that this commission could be established by defining mechanisms for joint cooperation in areas such as international peace and security, addressing common threats including drug trafficking, terrorism, extremism, and the misuse of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, satellites, electromagnetism, maritime insecurity, human trafficking, and cybersecurity threats, all while taking into account shared economic mechanisms.

Ahmadian further suggested that BRICS members, alongside their economic cooperation, could lay the foundation for a new global security system, addressing the weaknesses and gaps in the current security framework.

He stressed, “I believe that this proposal and initial idea can be realized through the consultation and cooperation of all parties.”

The BRICS high-level security officials’ meeting commenced today in Russia, with Iran and other BRICS members in attendance.

In addition to Iran, representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia participated in the meeting.

At the conference, Ahmadian, as Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, will present Iran’s positions and proposals in three panels.

On the first day of his visit, Ahmadian also held discussions with Sergey Shoigu, Russia’s National Security Secretary, Putin’s special assistant for international cooperation, Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister, and South Africa’s Minister of the Presidency, focusing on enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation on the international stage.
