WANA (Dec 10) – Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, addressed accusations from the European Troika (France, Germany, and the UK) in a letter to the UN Security Council and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He warned that any threats to activate the “snapback mechanism” would not only be unconstructive but would also provoke a decisive response from Iran.
Iravani emphasized Iran’s commitment to meaningful diplomacy in his Monday letter to the rotating Security Council president, Linda Thomas-Greenfield of the United States, and Secretary-General Guterres.
He stated, “Iran remains committed to good-faith engagement and exploring all diplomatic avenues to address shared challenges. However, the Troika must acknowledge that meaningful diplomacy requires genuine engagement and commitment adherence.”
Key Points of Iran’s Response:
- Rejection of Troika’s Claims: Iran dismissed allegations of its failure to adhere to JCPOA commitments, arguing that such claims overlook the U.S. withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 and the subsequent inaction of the Troika and the EU in fulfilling their obligations.
- U.S. Withdrawal as the Core Issue: The envoy reiterated that the current challenges stem from the unilateral U.S. exit from the deal and its imposition of sanctions, which violated both the JCPOA and UNSC Resolution 2231.
- Transparency and Cooperation: Iran asserted its extensive cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) despite external pressures, maintaining that its nuclear measures are reversible and consistent with JCPOA provisions.
- Dispute Mechanism Misuse: The letter criticized the Troika’s reference to the dispute resolution mechanism as a politically motivated move rather than a genuine effort to uphold the agreement.
- Violation of Transition Day Commitments: The Troika’s failure to lift sanctions in October 2023, coupled with the imposition of new sanctions in 2024, was described as a blatant breach of their commitments under the JCPOA and Resolution 2231.
- Continued Commitment to NPT: Iran reaffirmed its adherence to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) while asserting its right to peaceful nuclear development.
- Call for Meaningful Diplomacy: The ambassador urged the Troika to engage in genuine diplomacy, emphasizing that constructive dialogue requires mutual respect and adherence to commitments.
Iravani concluded by reiterating Iran’s readiness to explore diplomatic pathways to address shared challenges, while firmly warning against escalatory measures, such as the activation of the Snapback Mechanism.
