Iraqi PM: Iraq’s Ties with Iran are Based on Shared Interests
WANA (Dec 29) – In his latest remarks, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani addressed his country’s relationships with both Iran and the United States, emphasizing their distinct but strategic importance.
Al-Sudani highlighted that Iraq’s relationship with Iran is rooted in neighborly ties and shared interests. At the same time, he underscored that Iraq’s relationship with the US is a strategic partnership.
Iraqi Prime Minister responded to criticisms that Iraq is either following Iran’s directives or influenced by US policies. He stated, “This duality will only end when others overcome their obsession with Tehran and Washington.”
He elaborated, “Our relations with Iran are based on neighborly principles and commonalities. Iran is a country that stood by Iraq, supporting its political process and aiding in the fight against terrorism.”
Al-Sudani also emphasized the significance of Iraq’s ties with the US, describing them as a strategic and transparent partnership built on the Strategic Framework Agreement.
“The US led the international coalition and supported Iraq’s efforts to combat terrorism. Alongside the sacrifices of its own people, Iraq achieved victory with the help of these allies,” Iraqi Prime Minister said.
The prime minister’s balanced remarks reflect Iraq’s efforts to navigate its relationships with two influential powers while asserting its independence and strategic priorities.
