Israel’s Misleading Tactics in Amsterdam
WANA (Nov 10) – Last Thursday, Amsterdam witnessed a tense match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Known for their extremism and violent behavior, Maccabi fans displayed provocative actions throughout the game and its surrounding events.
They refused to observe a moment of silence for the victims of Spain’s recent floods and chanted racist slogans against Arabs during the game. Slogans like “Gaza has no more schools because there are no more children” and “The Israeli army should kill all Arabs” starkly highlighted the hateful mindset of some Maccabi supporters.
This match took place while the Israeli government continued its attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, with no international sporting events being postponed in response. After the game, where Maccabi lost 5-0, Israeli fans clashed with Palestinian protesters, tearing and burning Palestinian flags. The violence escalated to the point where Amsterdam police arrested several Israeli fans for carrying explosives and causing public disorder.

Isaac Herzog, Israel’s President, commented on these incidents, saying that the violence reminded him of the October 7 attacks. He attempted to equate this violence with Israel’s own assaults on Palestinians, ignoring that Israel itself has been committing human rights violations in Gaza and other Palestinian territories. Meanwhile, Western media, by using phrases like “antisemitism,” tried to frame Israel as a victim and blame Palestinian supporters for the conflict.
In response to these events, David Lammy, the UK’s Foreign Secretary, voiced support for Israel over what he called “antisemitic attacks” in Amsterdam. However, his stance drew negative reactions from online users, with many criticizing the West’s double standards and calling for condemnation of the violent behavior displayed by Israeli fans.
Interestingly, before the game, The Jerusalem Post reported that Mossad agents were present in Amsterdam to monitor the events, highlighting Israel’s efforts to manage public perception and use such opportunities for its own propaganda.
The West’s unconditional support for Israel, combined with media misrepresentation in Amsterdam, reflects an organized effort to obscure Israel’s crimes and deny human rights in the occupied territories. This double standard, where Israel evades accountability and assumes the role of victim, has long been supported openly and covertly by Western governments.
As the world witnesses real genocide in Gaza, these countries are not only failing to uphold their human rights commitments but are also attempting to justify Israel’s actions using broad terms like “antisemitism” and “right to self-defense.” Such support intensifies tensions within Western societies and fuels hatred and violence globally.
In the end, the continued double standards in Western policies will carry increasing political and social costs for these nations, as it becomes harder to conceal from their own people and the world that supporting Israel’s atrocities ultimately leads to instability and even greater crises.
