WANA (Aug 18) – Mohsen Hormozi, Tehran’s Deputy for Transportation and Traffic, announced on August 18, 2024, that the contract for purchasing 791 wagons from China, initiated in 2016, has finally been executed under the current city administration.

He stated that the Chinese side has received the payment, and the mass production process has begun. The first train set is expected to arrive in February, with two additional sets arriving each month starting next year. He also mentioned that the financing has been activated, with part of it already transferred to the wagon manufacturing company.

The deputy mayor also mentioned that two rubber-wheeled tram sets funded by China would arrive next month.

Shahriar Afandizadeh, CEO of Tehran’s Transport and Traffic Organization, emphasized that each of these systems would introduce a new mode of transportation to Tehran. He noted the variety of rail systems globally, stating that LRT (Light Rail Transit) is often favored due to its lower cost compared to the metro.

He added that alongside the existing 11 metro lines, two light urban rail lines would be added, with a preference towards LRT over trams. If successful in Tehran, this system could set a positive precedent for public transportation across the country.
