WANA (Aug 28) – The Iranian Embassy in South Africa has announced the release of 10 Iranian sailors who had been detained in Mozambique for 18 months.

According to the embassy, these sailors were arrested by Mozambican authorities 18 months ago for unauthorized entry into the country’s coastal waters.

After months of legal, judicial, and diplomatic efforts, the sailors have finally been freed and are on their way back to Iran.

Last July, Mehdi Aghajafari, the former Iranian ambassador to Pretoria and accredited ambassador to Mozambique, visited Nampula, located 2,200 kilometers north of Maputo.

During his visit, he met with two groups of Iranian prisoners detained on two separate fishing vessels off the coast of Mozambique.
