Shervin Hajipour: From Melody to Political Challenge
WANA (Sep 23) – In 2022, the events surrounding the death of Mahsa Amini had a profound impact on Iran’s artistic community.
Shervin Hajipour, a prominent and controversial Iranian artist, was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison due to his activities against the Islamic Republic and for allegedly inciting violence.
His protest song “Baraye” became a focal point in this legal case. Released during widespread street protests two years ago, the song quickly went viral on social media, with opposition media outlets using it to encourage youth to confront police and engage in civil unrest.
Hajipour has repeatedly stated that his sole intention was to amplify the voices of young people to the authorities, arguing that his punishment is unjust. He has utilized his social media platforms to communicate his message to both the public and officials.
Earlier, the spokesperson for Iran’s Judiciary responded to Shervin Hajipour’s sentencing, stating that no request for appeal had been filed and that the legal process of his ruling had been completed. However, following new reviews, some penalties were lifted, and a suspension of half of his sentence was issued.
Now, after significant controversy, Shervin announced in a video that his case has been granted amnesty by Iran’s leadership and has been closed.
According to statements from the Iranian Judiciary, Shervin’s father was previously a member of the terrorist organization known as the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MKO).
At the 65th Grammy Awards, Shervin Hajipour received an award presented by Jill Biden, the wife of the President of the United States. Undoubtedly, the organizers of the Grammys aimed to encourage Shervin’s supporters to continue their protests and, in a way, inject hope into the opposition against the rulers of Tehran.
